SCHOOL PROGRAMS



Who Sees the Lighthouse? Assemblies
Preschool and Kindergarten
(up to 40 students per session - 25 mins.) Author in lighthouse or nautical theme clothes. Short discussion of what lighthouses are and what they do. Author reads text (with laser pointer) from slides. Counting and discussion of illustrations. Students join the reading at refrains - rounds and clapping are all part of the fun.

First and Second Grade
As for "Preschool - Kindergarten" above, but 35 mins. Students come prepared for Question & Answer period at close of assembly.

Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades
(Up to 75 students per session, 45 mins.) Author in lighthouse or nautical theme clothes. Two brief slide shows - 1) Introduction to the different kinds of lighthouses 2) Author reads text (with laser pointer)-students read refrain while clapping and stomping. Question & Answer period at close of assembly.

Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades
(Up to 75 students per session 45 mins.) The multiple ways books are made and illustrated today ( illustrations from Who Sees the Lighthouse?, Christmas Lights, and LITTLE GREEN BOOK as examples) - book examples from hand-crafted, pop-ups to computer, e-books, and many more. Slide show, hand- outs. Questions and Answer period at close of assembly.

Fourth, and Fifth Grades
Gifted and Talented Seminar.
Inspirational/humorous career stories.
Original art displayed. Question/answer
session. Writing and art can be critiqued -
time allotted before/after class.
30-60 min. 20 students max./session.

A Celebration of Books and Holiday Lights Assembly
All Grades
30-45 mins. This multimedia, interactive program includes a slide presentation of the picture book Christmas Lights. The slide discussion features the inside story on how books are illustrated and produced. Students (and their parents) are surprised to discover the multi-cultural history of our holiday lights from medieval plays, Menorahs, first American Christmas light, Kwanzaa Kinara, Mexican luminaries, and into 21st century Fiber Optics. Students are mesmerized with the author/illustrator's lighted vest, festive lights, laser pointer, and colorful light show. Time permitting, a lively Question & Answer session completes the assembly. Autographing session can follow.

Family Evening School Assemblies
A Celebration of Lighthouses with Author Ann Fearrington
(no limit on audience number - 30 mins. - author supplied door prizes) Author in lighthouse or nautical theme clothes. Author reads Who Sees the Lighthouse? via slides - audience participation at the refrains. Q&A session, if time. Door prizes awarded. Autographing session can follow.

PTA (PTO) Literacy Night
(no limit on audience number - 35 mins. - this assembly available only with daytime student programs ) LITTLE GREEN BOOKS are given to each family. Brief slide talk (with laser pointer) on literacy keys in book; parents asked to post-it note one key they are going to work on this year. Question and answer session. Author-supplied door prizes awarded. Autographing session can follow.

Note: this program is for parents. A separate student program, held in the media center, includes reading, being read to, checking out books, visiting www.studioann.com, assembling paper- folded bookmarks (star, bunny, lighthouse) - directions found on www.studioann.com.

Professional Workshops
Working Directly With Parents for Their Children's Literacy

90-120 mins. Multiple techniques and materials are introduced to involve the entire school staff in literacy promotion with parents. Slide show, role-playing, handouts. Q&A. Autographing session.

Bringing a Picture Book To Life
90-120 mins. A hands-on workshop for teachers and librarians - from book selection and special voices to costumes, props, writing projects, drama and art & crafts. Multiple techniques and ideas are introduced by author and demonstrated by attendees and author. Q&A. Autographing session.

BOOKSTORE PROGRAM
All Ages - 25 mins.
  • Author(dressed in lighthouse or nautical theme) reads Who Sees the Lighthouse? complete with audience participation (reading, clapping, and foot stomping) at the refrains.
  • Child-parent creation of lighthouse bookmark. No scissors, tape, or coloring necessary for this project. Bookstore supplies sheets of white copier paper. The bookmark is in the spirit of the book's paper-cut illustrations.
  • Question & Answer Session - 5 mins.
  • Book sales and autographing.

Special Equipment Needed
Slide projector provided, but will need a screen, library media cart, and extension cord. In schools, a blackboard.

Preferred Audience Size
Large( hundreds) or small adult audience. Large and medium-sized professional workshops. Very young children(ages 3-7) respond best in smaller groups (under 40). Older children are fine in groups up to 75.

Fees
School Visits - spend the day and present program to three assemblies - $1,000. plus travel and lodging. An additional class is $250. To include a PTA (PTO) Literacy Night (brief talk, slide show, Q&A) for that same evening, add $250 (if LITTLE GREEN BOOKS are presented to parents).

Family Evening Who Sees the Lighthouse? and Holiday Lights presentations - $700.@ (when presented as a single appearance - without day-school visit) plus travel and lodging.

Book Fair Appearance - travel and lodging.

Professionals' Keynote Address - $2,500. plus travel and lodging.

Librarian/Teacher Workshop - One day - 2 hour program - $450. plus travel and lodging.

Bookstore Program and Autograph Session - travel and lodging.
